25 reasons why the Olsen twins are so much cooler than any Kardashian

Olsens

  1.  On being French – Kim K. gets robbed in France – the Olsen twins marry the French!
  2. The weddings – while I do not advocate smoking how cool is a small intimate Manhatten wedding followed by drinking cocktails in the rear garden of a private residence followed by dinner and bowls of cigarettes while they hang out and chill.  Kim K., however, her weddings (yes plural) were a circus all for show and filmed for reality tv – ugh!
  3.  The men they marry – the Olsen’s date (and marry) older cooler guys who are confident in their skin.  The Kardashian’s marry men with all kinds of issues including drugs, alcohol, confidence, high maintenance, mental issues and on and on…
  4. Children – in today’s day it is much cooler to wait and have one or two children not a whole crew at even the risk of their health.
  5. Fashion – the Olsen’s lead the fashion trend – check out what they were wearing five years ago and it is on the runway now – check out what a Kardashian is wearing and see it in Forever 21 tomorrow.
  6. High-end fashion – Kardashian’s wear things that look cheap, not polished as if it took days to pull together – Olsen’s look like they pulled something from their closet and made it seem high fashion.
  7. Dash vs. The Row – Dash looks like a Forever 21 – The Row looks like a modern day Saks.  The Row has high-end art, furniture, and even a pool. – I want to go.
  8. Education – One thing that really bothers me is the fact that the Kardashian’s do not believe in higher education.  At least the Olsen’s went to NYU to hone their craft.
  9. Pick a lane – The Kardashian’s are all over the place  – what the heck do they do for a living – The Olsen’s decided – we want to run a high-end fashion house and they have and have earned the respect of an industry that is not easy to obtain.
  10. The president – Obama’s wife has been known to wear the Olsen’s designs – while our former president only showed disdain for the K clan.
  11. The parents – ever heard of Mary Kate and Ashley’s parents, not much – and the Kardashian’s….where do I even start with this one….
  12. Back to the brand – the Olsens won awards with their fashion – where are the Kardashian awards??
  13. Where they live – NY vs. Calabasas – please
  14. The Olsen’s sister is a real actor – not a reality star.
  15. The Olsen’s don’t want to be photographed, The Kardashian’s beg to get their photos taken – even after a robbery.
  16. The Olsen’s would never, ever be on a reality show
  17. More people watch the Kardashian family – more people respect the Olsens – which is better
  18. The Olsen’s got their start as babies on a cute feel good show – the Kardashian family got their start from a sex tape.
  19. It has been reported that Kyle and Kendall want to be the next Olsen twins – it is always best to be the leader.
  20. We all buy Starbucks because of the Olsen’s – what do we buy because of the Kardashian’s – lip stuff??
  21. At the Met this year – Kim K. tried to tone it down and looked way more like an Olsen – hmmm.
  22. The Olsen’s uses the media – the media uses the Kardashians
  23. The Kardashian’s own their products – the Olsen’s own the company
  24. The Olsen twins have earned their stripes and built their resumes – hello Kardashian’s
  25. The Olsen’s stepped out of the limelight and still made the news – that makes them very much like the queen of the paps – Jackie O!

College Visits and Carrying the Right Bag

This week was another college visit as my son decides which college he will attend in the fall.  We have looked at everything from large universities to smaller private colleges.  He is leaning to the smaller environment as it seems like a better fit for him.

While visiting the larger university I carried the Tory Burch Ella tote in black.  Since I always wear non-sensible shoes, I brought a second pair of comfortable shoes, an umbrella, phone chargers, snacks, pens, paper, and a sweater – so I needed lots of room.  This bag has seen me through many an airport trip.

But today’s trip was to a smaller college which happens to be my son’s top selection.  Because it was a short trip I carried the vintage Burberry Bucket bag.  I was able to fit a phone, charger, snack, my glasses, sunglasses, cards, wallet, pens and paper.  This matched the yoga top, skinny jeans, jean jacket and brown boots ensemble.  Stay tuned to see where he is off to this fall.  I know that mama will be needing some retail therapy as he  leaves our nest!

Cheers!

Crock Pots and the Right Bag

Ode to the 50’s.  What would we do without our crock pots.  I have paired the perfect recipe to get you through the day and once dinner is done – the perfect purse to get you through the night.

But first here is the perfect Crock Pot – the one that I am obsessed with. crock-pot

And below is a great recipe that isn’t too mommy (if you know what I mean).

Glazed Short Ribs over White Beans

1 cup dried Great Northern beans (8 ounces

2 cups low-sodium chicken broth

One 15-ounce can diced tomatoes, drained

1/4 cup dry white wine

3 garlic cloves, smashed

One 6-inch rosemary sprig plus 1/2 teaspoon finely chopped rosemary

2 tablespoons tomato paste

5 pound bone-in beef short ribs, cut crosswise into 2″ pieces

2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

1 tablespoon honey

Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper

Combine the beans, broth, tomatoes, wine, garlic, and one tablespoon of the tomato paste and put into the crock pot.  Nestle the ribs in the middle of mixture and cook on low for around three hours.  Transfer the ribs to a baking sheet and cover with foil.  Continue to cook the rest for another three hours.

Season the ribs with salt and pepper.  Mix the vinegar, honey and rest of tomato paste and cover the ribs.  Broil for three minutes.  Spoon the bean mixture, chopped rosemary into a bowl and top with glazed ribs.  Enjoy!

And to carry after dinner – go vintage.  I recently discovered Von Maur sells vintage couture bags for a great price – and bonus their credit cards have no interest.  I fell in love with this vintage bag that is the perfect pairing for the best crock pot in the world.

Want Vintage Chanel?

chanelEvery woman needs a little Chanel in their wardrobe.  So how do you get one and get it for a “steal”.  Here are the top ten tips on finding that perfect vintage bag!

  1.  Purchase online – there are some very good reputable sites that sell Chanel.  Unfortunately thanks to the internet you will pay more than you would have 10 years ago.  But you will get a bag that has been authenticated and have a pretty good idea of what you are getting before you receive it.  Some top online choices are Yoogi’s Closet – a favorite of mine.  I love the look of the site and it is easy to navigate.  Their slogan rings with me – “not pre owned, pre loved”.  Pricing is fair and the delivery is terrific.  Malleries is another great option.  They have a nice selection and again the pricing is fair for the product.  Finally I like the Vintage Contessa.  The selection is good and the pricing is pretty good as well. Also, let’s not forget the Real Real for some great buys but you have to be quick on this site to get the “hot” buys.
  2. Look for your Chanel in an unusual color.  Classic colors command a higher price tag but something seasonal (especially off season) might get you a better price.
  3. Take a shot at Lux DH and get your dream bag on a payment plan.  Not only are the prices fair but you can go on an installment plan with them!
  4. Get to know your local resale shop.  In my neck of the woods it is Style Encore – owned by Once Upon a Child.  I know the owners and they have an alert when they get in a high end bag like Chanel – and I have been called.  You can not believe what some people will get rid of.
  5. Pursue your local thrift shops.  This isn’t something that I have ever done before but I have a friend who scored an authentic Louis Vuitton and another who found a Prada bag (funky colors) but for less than $500.
  6. Head to New York City or Chicago.  The very best in vintage is in these two very busy and fashionable.  Here is a link to a great article about the best vintage shops in NYC in Gotham.
  7. Visit a tiny wealthy town.  There are some great boutiques in some suburbs that have great fashion.  And because the demand is smaller the prices are too.  A few to check out are Lake Forrest Illinois, Glencoe Illinois, Newport Coast California, Woodbury New York, Darien Connecticut, and Grosse Point Michigan.  My favorite is Samira’s Upscale Boutique in Grosse Point!
  8. Travel to Europe – ok the trip will cost more than the savings but you will have fun.  For Chanel London or Paris is your best option.  And don’t forget the VAT back!
  9. Here’s a shocker – visit an outlet mall.  Yes you can even score a Chanel at an outlet.  One of the best is Woodbury Commons in New York.  There are others and a little birdie told me not to forget Las Vegas.  And there have been rare sightings at TJ Max.
  10. Bid on one – yes some places like Ebay and Everything But The House have had Chanel too!

But my reading friends – there is nothing like holding your first Chanel!  Cheers

Fashion Forward and Animal Friendly

stellamI love my pets – did I say I love my pets.  So it kills my soul a little to use leather and I never, repeat never wear fur.  In honor of Kitty and Woody (my cat and King Charles Cavalier) today is dedicated to animal friendly handbags.

The queen of fashion being animal friendly has to be Stella McCartney.  I am loving this little Black Becks Mini Shoulder Bag.  If you want to look Fido in the eye today and feel good about your choices head on over to her website and see some unique and lovely purses.

Check out this great article about fashion forward animal friendly designers..

With spring and summer lines debuting on racks around the world, fashion choices are another way that animals intersect with our lives. And some forward-thinking (and fashion-forward) designers are making those choices with animal welfare in mind — designing runway-ready pieces that are cruelty-free. Some don’t use any animal products at all — like wool, leather, suede or silk — while others are taking big steps toward that goal by foregoing products like fur.

Here’s the official list of the best animal-friendly designers, compiled with information from The Humane Society of the United States and PETA.

1. Stella McCartney

An outspoken animal advocate and PETA supporter, McCartney has made it part of her brand to use only responsible materials, and never works with fur or leather. She actively calls on other designers and shoppers to do the same:

McCartney designs couture coats with faux fur, like this one donned by singer Katy Perry:

2. John Bartlett

Once known for his cheeky use of leather and fur, designer John Bartlett had a total change of heart after he saw an expose recorded by PETA, sent to him by Stella McCartney, which depicted the realities of the fur industry. Now, Bartlett’s line is one of the most animal welfare-conscious ones out there, and he’s become an advocate for other designers to follow in his wake.

In a piece for The Dodo, Bartlett wrote, “In order to really move the fur free needle, I believe it’s going to take one of fashion’s handful of game changers to publicly abandon fur and come out as a true animal ally.”

Now, Bartlett’s lines are often even have a strong animal theme:

3. Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart (Vaute Couture)

Worn by the likes of Ellen Degeneres, Emily Deschanel and Alicia Silverstone, Vaute Couture (the “v” is for “vegan”) was started by former Ford Model Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart, with the mission of creating high fashion pieces that are also vegan, made of recyclable and recycled fibers and produced locally. The house was the subject of a news segment on compassionate fashion last year:

4. Joshua Katcher (Brave Gentlemen)

Designer Joshua Katcher creates luxury mens’ lines that use no animal products, instead choosing to use “future leather” (chemical-based microfiber) and “future wool” (recycled materials and cotton blends). Katcher also runs a website, The Discerning Brute, meant to be “a resource for intelligent men who want to make ethical, informed decisions concerning their lifestyles.”

5. Vivienne Westwood

UK designer Vivienne Westwood, a longtime vegetarian, renounced using fur in designs after learning from PETA about the cruelties of the fur industry. She gave some insight into her love for animals:

Now, Westwood uses faux fur, like this bag:

6. Tommy Hilfiger

Tommy Hilfiger dropped fur in 2007 after meeting the vice president of PETA, Dan Matthews, at the wedding of longtime animal activist Pamela Anderson. Hilfiger was swayed to the argument against using fur, and immediately stopped producing clothes with the material.

Here are some of his faux fur looks — which are pretty indistinguishable from the real thing:

7. Calvin Klein

Calvin Klein was an early adopter of animal-friendly designs, announcing in 1994 that he would no longer use fur, due to “my own reflections on the humane treatment of animals” and “the fact that the fur segment of our business simply did not fit with our corporate philosophy any longer.”

He’s also mastered the art of faux fur, with looks like this:

8. Charlotte Ronson

English designer Charlotte Ronson has been a longtime opponent of fur, and even held a fur-free fashion show sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States.

Ronson still makes faux look fab, though:

9. Marc Bouwer

A designer to stars like Angelina Jolie, Paris Hilton and Mariah Carey, Marc Bouwer went fur-free after seeing a PETA expose on animals that are killed for their fur. He soon teamed up with PETA for the official launch of his new cruelty-free fashion line at New York Fashion Week. Bouwer talks about why he went fur-free:

Now, Bouwer uses faux fur to make a bold statement on the runway:

How To Buy Your First Hermès Birkin

Want a Birkin – are you saving up your pennies like I am and need some tips – here is a great article from the experts in the know – Forbes

For status and craftsmanship, few handbags rival the Hermès Birkin. Kim Kardashian, Bethenny Frankel Lady Gaga, Victoria Beckham and Naomi Campbell are just a handful of the celebrities who have been spotted with them. And Cate Blanchett toted one throughout Woody Allen’s latest movie, “Blue Jasmine,” in the role of Jasmine Francis, who moved from wealthy Manhattan socialite to destitute mental wreck after her husband’s Ponzi scheme was exposed.

That bag was supplied by the manufacturer – part of a stash of loaners it circulates to advertisers and movie makers. But in real life the Birkin is in such hot demand that Dallas-based Heritage Auctions is offering 78 of them, more than a third in pristine condition, at its Sept. 23 luxury accessories auction in Beverly Hills.

“Birkins are the most sought after bag in the world and have been for a long time,” says Matthew Rubinger, director, luxury accessories at Heritage.  (He’s profiled in my post, “How One Millennial With A Liberal Arts Degree Landed A Six-Figure Job.”) Therefore they hold their value as a collectible. One of the more valuable Birkins coming up in the latest auction is an electric blue 35cm crocodile with an indigo chevre (goat) interior and gold hardware in pristine condition. The starting bid is $30,000 and it is expected to fetch $60,000 to $70,000.

Most people who pay that much money for a handbag don’t intend to use it and even those who think they will are reluctant to once they own it. But these bags are really made to “be worn and carried and loved,” Rubinger says. While you’re paying for the name, you’re also getting superior quality and even if you make the Birkin a workhorse, it’s still a good investment. A “carefully used” one typically fetches between 80% and 120% of what the previous owner paid for it. In contrast, a lesser brand handbag in the same condition can be resold for only about 10% of what the original owner spent. “So if you can afford it, you’re making a better economic decision to buy a special piece that’s going to hold its value.”

Going to work – handbags that work for you….

Just because you are off to the worksite doesn’t mean you can not be fashionable while carrying your electronics and Erin Condren planners on board.  Today’s woman isn’t just a women that lunches – they power lunch, start companies, employ others and somehow manage to get to their kids events.  Or at least we really try.  (I must confess I missed a few times).  So if I am going to pay all that money for a great iPad, MacBook Pro and an Erin Condren I am going to carry it in style.  The bag I recommend is a Tory Burch York Buckle Tote in the hot color for the season purple.  Specifically purple Iris.  I have provided a link to this great bag.
